Auto Ran Off-Fixed Object (Fatality) Print E-mail

On Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 12:46 am, DPS Police responded to an auto accident incident near Northern Marianas College.

Crash Scene:

The crash occurred at the eastbound shoulder of Chalan Monsignor Guerrero, As Terlaje, intersection of Chalan Monsignor Guerrero and Chalan Tun Antonio Apa.

Police arrived on scene and observed the front half of a Beige 2013 Hyundai Tucson, 5 door wagon, resting up against a concrete utility pole engulfed in flames. Eye witnesses informed Police there was an occupant trapped inside. DFEMS ambulance and rescue units arrived on scene. The wind was strong and the front half of the vehicle still engulfed in flames.

Traffic Investigators gathered evidence at the scene and statements from eyewitnesses. Preliminary investigation discloses the car was traveling eastbound (up As Terlaje hill) at a high rate of speed. The car ran off the road to the right, first colliding with the NMC's retaining wall then straight towards the concrete utility pole were it made impact with the concrete pole (final resting point). The car sustained extensive damage from the impact and the fire. A sole occupant’s body (driver) was recovered from the driver's seat lifeless.

The vehicle’s operator was identified as Su Min Jung, 19 year old Korean female. She was identified by her father who arrived on scene. Her body was transported to CHCC where Dr. Florence Schenker pronounced Su Min Jung dead at 0335hrs.

This incident marks the 3rd traffic fatality for the year 2017. Preliminary investigations reveal speed as definite factor to the crash and is currently under investigation.
